The story of the weekend at the Race of the Americas for Team Top Kart was Matt Jaskol. On Friday morning Matt was taken to the hospital and was found to have walking pneumonia. Being the racer that he is, Matt decided to tough it out and race, but missed all of practice. Matt's tuner, Jay Vormwald, put on a great set-up for qualifying and Matt impressed everyone by qualifying 5th. Matt would go on to finish third and fourth in the two finals and now sits in third in points. Kyle Wiegand also impressed with two top ten finishes and is currently fifth in points. Look for both Matt who currently holds the track record at New Castle and Kyle whose home track is New Castle to be the pace setters at the first round of the East Championship at New Castle.
In Cadet, Tyler Thomas was one of the drivers to beat all weekend. Starting off the weekend well, Tyler qualified on pole by four tenths of a second. He then followed his qualifying performance up with two heat race wins. This gave Tyler pole for both finals. Former Top Kart team driver Sage Karam was Tyler's main competition and both drivers put on an exceptional show in both finals. Tyler would end up finishing second and third in the two finals, which puts him in second place in points. Andrew Murray, Camden Geise, and Jacob Will also had great weekends. Andrew is currently fifth in points with Camden in sixth, and Jacob in seventh.
Johnny Johnson and Brendan Phinny both showed their speed, but struggled with fuel separation for most of the weekend. Once the problem was solved Brendan was the fastest JICA on the track moving from last to fifth in the final heat race. In both finals, Brendan moved from 28th to the top ten before being involved in a wreck. Johnny broke reeds in both finals, but was one of the fastest karts on track. Look for Johnny to rebound at New Castle where he had a podium finish last season and start his charge for the ICA Championship.
